I Have Allergies - What Can I Do?

We get many questions from customers who have allergic reactions to jewelry, especially earrings. Unfortunately, medical science doesn't yet have an easy explanation or cure for such sensitivities. There's a common misconception that buying stamped 14k/18k/24k gold, or "solid gold" or "pure gold" will prevent reactions. Sadly, this is rarely the case.

There's no such thing as "solid" or "pure" gold. If there were, it would be 100k instead of 24k. Solid gold is too soft to be used for jewelry, so it is mixed with alloys to give it strength and durability. The mix of alloys varies from one manufacturer to another. This is why one 14k gold item can be held up next to another and their color may vary slightly.

It is usually these alloys that cause a reaction in the wearer, not the gold (or silver) itself. Since each designer uses a varying alloy base, it is best to simply try an item out for a day or two and see how it feels. Some people are just too sensitive - I am one of them - after only a few hours of wear, my ears will itch and bleed. Consequently, I save my earrings for special occasions only or wear clips instead.

How should I care for my jewelry?

Our jewelry collection is made with the same quality and durability as high-end, fine jewelry, and is made to last a lifetime. Therefore, you can get the most out of it by giving it the same care as your fine jewelry items.

Although it takes some effort, removing your jewelry prior to showering, bathing, exercising, or housecleaning will extend its life considerably. Cleansers, perfumes, cosmetics, and other chemicals that you come into contact with daily can be abrasive to the finish of your jewelry, causing tiny scratches or other damage that will, over time, ruin the high polished finish. Additionally, these activities increase your jewelry's exposure to moisture in the air - which is what causes a natural tarnish to build up.

Your jewelry should always be stored in a safe place when not in use. A felt or velvet lined jewelry box or roll is ideal. Also, to prevent tarnish buildup on your sterling silver, try storing it in an air-tight container. Simple sealing plastic baggies from the grocery store will work great. This simple trick can cut tarnishing down by 90%!

Just like your clohting, your jewelry needs to be cleaned from time-to-time. It picks up the oils from your skin, dirt and debris from the air, and residue buildup from the soaps, lotions, and cleansers that you wear daily.

Items that are worn daily will need more frequent cleaning. We recommend using a soft, pre-treated jewelry polishing cloth for daily dirt and oil removal and for keeping your jewelry stones and metals sparkling. A very light buffing is all that's required if you do it daily - just a few seconds will do the trick.

When deeper cleaning is required, a very gentle liquid jewelry cleanser is ideal. The liquid can get into all of the tiny cracks and crevices of your jewelry and break dirt and oil away from the surfaces. Some jewelry can be left to soak overnight, but porous stones (such as pearls and opals) should never be soaked beyond 3 to 5 minutes. If you still have stubborn dirt or tarnish buildup, take your items to a trusted local jeweler for a deep steam or ultrasonic cleaning. This takes minutes, costs a very small fee, and will leave your jewelry sparkling like it's brand new.
